Would you like to tie me up with some of your ties, Ty?

August 23, 2008

I handed my son a couple of ties while packing for college when I realized that I had done him a great disservice. I had never taught him how to tie a tie. I guess we were always in a hurry before dances because I would always tie it around my own neck, loosen the knot and he would slip it over his head. To remedy this misfortune, I’m attaching a YouTube video of my favorite knot – the Windsor. Not only does it sound fancy, it looks great.

My dad taught me how to tie a tie when I was 16. My first “real job” was as a bag boy at Safeway in Dallas. I not only had to wear a dress shirt and tie but also a brown apron to work every day. I got pretty skilled at tying the tie while driving my 5-speed MGB to work – a feat which I’m not sure I could do today.

The strange title is a quote from one of my favorite comedies of all time – Caddyshack. When I was 17, I felt it was critical that I memorize as many quotes from the movie as possible and cleverly interject them into casual conversation. Others take pride in quoting famous authors and poets. I find no greater satisfaction than weaving a story with a subtle comment from Judge Smails or Carl Spackler.

Thank you very little…
